Mini Masala Idli Fry

A very easy and popular breakfast and tiffin item — mini masala idlis are spice-tossed idlis fried in an onion and tomato mixture. Perfect for using up leftover idlis or idli batter, with or without any accompaniment.
Ingredients
- Required amount of idli batter
- 1 tbsp oil
- 2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 green chili, chopped
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- Few curry leaves
- Salt to taste
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- Chopped coriander for garnish
Method
- 1
Take leftover idlis, or steam fresh mini idlis in greased mini idli moulds for 8-10 minutes and demold.
- 2
Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and urad dal. Once tempering and the urad dal turns dark yellow, add curry leaves and chopped green chilli.
- 3
Add chopped onions and sauté. Once softened, add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala powder, coriander powder, and salt.
- 4
Cook until the tomatoes turn mushy. Add the mini idlis and toss to coat with the flavours.
- 5
Garnish with chopped coriander and serve hot, alone or with coconut and onion chutneys.
